The Anambra State Police Command said it has arrested a police officer captured in a viral social media video allegedly threatening violence, authorities said on Thursday.
The command identified the officer as Assistant Superintendent of Police Newton Isokpehi, who serves in the state command.
In a statement, the police said the officer was promptly identified and taken into custody after a review of the video, which showed conduct deemed inconsistent with the standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The command said internal disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the officer, while a drug test had also been conducted as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the officer’s actions, saying the force would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office, incitement or any behaviour capable of undermining public confidence.”The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that will not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any form of unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust and confidence,” the statement said.
The command said the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public and assured residents that any officer found culpable would face sanctions in line with police regulations and the law.
The Police also urged officers to remain professional, emotionally balanced and respectful in the discharge of their duties, noting that public conduct is increasingly subject to scrutiny.
The command thanked members of the public, civil society groups and social media users for providing information that supports accountability and improved service delivery, and encouraged residents to continue reporting misconduct and security concerns.
