Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged his full support to his successor, Andy Burnham, as he delivered his farewell address outside 10 Downing Street before formally leaving office.
Starmer said he was stepping down confident that Britain was in a stronger and fairer position than when his government took office two years ago. He credited his administration with delivering progress during its time in power and expressed pride in its achievements.
The outgoing prime minister thanked the British public for the opportunity to serve and wished Burnham success as he prepares to lead the country through its next chapter.
Starmer said he was leaving office with grace and pride in what his government had accomplished before travelling to Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation to King Charles III.
Andy Burnham takes over as Britain’s fifth prime minister in four years, following Labour’s disappointing performance in the May local elections, which saw significant gains by the anti-immigration Reform UK party. Burnham now faces the challenge of rebuilding public confidence and addressing growing concerns over the economy, immigration and public services.
