LASEMA Concludes 24-Hour Response 4 Overnight Operation Across Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it has successfully handled four emergency incidents across the state during overnight operations, with no deaths or injuries recorded.

The incidents involved a petrol tanker accident at Ballet Bus Stop, a fallen container at Otedola Bridge, a fire at Ile-Epo Bus Stop and another fire at a residential building in Surulere.

In an update on the tanker accident at Ballet Bus Stop, inward Isolo, LASEMA said the tanker, which was conveying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), was recovered to an upright position with the assistance of a private towing truck.

It added that the tanker was moved to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) yard, while the affected Mercedes-Benz 4Matic Jeep was towed to Itire Police Station.

The agency said the road was treated with absorbent material after the recovery to eliminate the risk of an explosion adding that the carriageway has since been reopened to traffic.

At Otedola Bridge, inward Secretariat, the agency said its Tiger Team from C3 responded to a fallen container at about 9:18 p.m.

The 40-foot container, which was fully loaded, reportedly fell from an unidentified flatbed truck while ascending the bridge, obstructing about 15 per cent of the carriageway.

LASEMA said its team secured the scene and worked with LASTMA to manage traffic and prevent further incidents.

It added that the container was subsequently recovered and evacuated with the assistance of LASEMA’s low-bed truck and a private crane. The road was cleared and reopened, with no casualties reported.

At Ile-Epo Bus Stop, opposite Orile-Agege General Hospital, LASEMA said its Beta Team from Igando responded to a fire involving shops and residential structures in a shanty settlement.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The agency added that its response team, working with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police Force, prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Although properties and shanties were destroyed, no deaths or injuries were recorded. The fire was extinguished, and dampening-down operations were completed.

In a separate incident, LASEMA’s Cobra Team from Onipanu was activated at about 7:15 a.m. following a fire at 29 Bankole Moh Street, off Akerele Road, Surulere.

On arrival, responders found a storey building comprising three-bedroom flats that had been engulfed by fire. The blaze reportedly started in one room before spreading to other parts of the building.

LASEMA said the fire had been brought under control before the team arrived, while the cause remained undetermined.

The agency, alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the police, conducted a post-disaster assessment to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

No deaths or injuries were reported, while dampening-down and rescue operations were concluded.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the state government remained committed to prompt and professional emergency response.

The agency urged articulated truck drivers to secure containers properly and comply with safety regulations. It also advised residents to maintain electrical installations regularly and avoid indiscriminate construction.

Residents were urged to report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 112 and 767.
