LASEMA Responds To Fatal Kara Bridge Crash, Confirms 1 Death

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it responded to a road traffic accident that occurred in the early hours Friday on Kara Bridge, inward Mowe-Ibafo.

The accident resulted in the truck driver’s death after his vehicle overturned on Kara Bridge following what was said to be an apparent brake failure that triggered a multi-vehicle collision.

LASEMA said its response team arrived at the scene at about 5:46 a.m. after receiving reports of a truck carrying bags of monosodium glutamate that had overturned and blocked about 75% of the carriageway.

The agency said preliminary findings indicated that the crash was caused by brake failure, resulting in the driver losing control before the truck overturned.

It added that the crash caused severe traffic congestion and a secondary collision involving four other vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna, a mini truck transporting paint, a flatbed truck carrying imported plywood, and another fully loaded truck.

LASEMA said emergency responders recovered the body of an adult male trapped beneath the overturned truck and handed it over to the Federal Road Safety Corps for evacuation.

The agency added that two other adult males sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.

LASEMA said the accident scene was secured immediately, while traffic management measures were put in place to prevent further incidents and ease congestion adding that recovery operations involving two private tow trucks were underway to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the roadway.

It added that the operation was coordinated by LASEMA alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

For his part, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and commended the emergency responders for their professionalism.

The agency advised motorists to obey traffic diversions, follow instructions from traffic officials and maintain safe driving speeds around Kara Bridge while recovery efforts continue.
