Debutant Malawi stunned the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations defending champions Nigeria after a 3-2 victory in their Group C opener in Rabat, Morocco.
After a goalless first half, Malawi took the lead through Temwa Chawinga, who broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute.
Her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the advantage in the 79th minute.
Nigeria fought back with captain Rasheedat Ajibade converting a penalty to reduce the deficit.
Temwa Chawinga restored Malawi’s two-goal lead moments later completing her brace in the 95th minute before substitute Uchenna Kanu scored deep into added time to make it 3-2.
Nigeria will now look to bounce back in their second Group C fixture against Zambia on Saturday August 1 as they seek a place in the knockout stage.
