EFCC Questions Social Media Activists Over Alleged Naira Abuse

Two Nigerian social media activists questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of naira abuse have been released after cooperating with investigators, their lawyer said on Thursday.
Lawyer Inibehe Effiong said Peter Akah, popularly known as “Randy Peter”, and Precious Oruche, also known as “Mama Pee”, honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency on Wednesday after a previously scheduled appearance was rescheduled.
According to Effiong, the EFCC had initially invited the pair to appear on July 6 through separate invitation letters dated June 24 to clarify allegations relating to the abuse of the Nigerian currency.
He said the defence requested a new date because the clients were unavailable on the original date, and both later appeared before investigators at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
Effiong said the activists cooperated fully with investigators and were released after several hours of questioning. He added that they were expected to return to the commission as investigations continue.
The lawyer said his clients told investigators that the money referenced in the allegations was prop money used for entertainment purposes and not genuine naira notes.
Effiong described the EFCC’s conduct during the interrogation as professional and said the two activists were in good spirits and appreciated public concern over their safety.
The EFCC has not publicly commented on the lawyer’s account of the investigation.
