2027 Presidential Election: Nigerian Opposition Parties To Field One Candidate

Nigerian Opposition political parties have agreed to field a single candidate for the 2027 presidential election. This was revealed in a communique issued after a national summit in Ibadan, Oyo state Southwest Nigeria.

The meeting, held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, had in attendance leaders from major opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and New Nigeria People’s Party.

Reading the communique, Taminu Turaki, a factional national chairman of the PDP, said opposition leaders had resolved to work together to achieve a unified ticket aimed at “rescuing the nation and its long-suffering masses”.

The parties also said they would resist what they described as efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress to impose a one-party state, while pledging to defend multi-party democracy.

They asked the National Assembly to review the Electoral Act 2026, by removing provisions they said undermine the integrity of elections and conflict with constitutional principles.

The communique expressed reservations about the role of the chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, in conducting the 2027 general elections.

They alleged bias and questioned the electoral body head’s ability to ensure credible polls. The Opposition leaders also criticised INEC’s recently released guidelines, describing them as restrictive.

They called for an extension of the deadline for party primaries to the end of July 2026.

The Opposition parties demanded the immediate release of detained politicians and those facing prosecution for bailable offences. They claimed this would enable broader participation in the democratic process.

Cliqmetro reports that the summit was attended by prominent political figures like Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and David Mark, among others.
