Uganda Court Sentences Man To Death For Children Murders

A Ugandan-American man has been sentenced to death for the murder of four children at a daycare centre in Kampala, a court ruling that has shocked the East African country.
Prosecutors said Christopher Okello Onyum was arrested on April 2 while he attempted to flee the facility.
They told the court that Onyum, who holds Ugandan and U.S. citizenship, had confessed during the investigation. He claimed the act was intended to bring him wealth, although he later pleaded not guilty.
The judge rejected a defence argument that he was mentally ill, saying the nature of the crime indicated it was premeditated.
“I hereby sentence him to suffer death,” the judge said.

The judge added that the victims had been deliberately targeted and that the defendant showed no remorse.

Court proceedings heard testimony from staff at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre and from the victims’ families, describing the events surrounding the attack and its aftermath.

Prosecutors said investigators found evidence that Onyum had searched online for violent material and information about schools, though authorities said there was no clear political or religious motive.
