United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group has dismissed as “false, defamatory and malicious” social media claims alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the bank said the claims and related content were “entirely fabricated, reckless and without basis,” describing them as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and cause reputational harm.
The bank said three individuals linked to the creation and dissemination of the claims had been arrested. It identified them as Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
UBA said investigations were ongoing and could lead to further arrests and prosecutions of those involved in originating or amplifying the content.
The bank also issued a cease-and-desist notice to individuals, platforms and entities involved in publishing or reposting the claims, directing them to immediately remove the content and refrain from further dissemination.
It asked affected parties to preserve all records, including digital communications and metadata, relating to the publication pending further legal action. The group warned that failure to comply would result in legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief and damages.
The UBA Group said it is resolute in protecting the reputation, privacy and integrity of our brand, that of Mr. Elumelu, and will pursue all necessary legal avenues, civil and criminal, to ensure that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable.
