PDP Faction Set To Ratify Jonathan Presidential Bid

A faction of Nigeria’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party said it would ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate at a meeting scheduled for Saturday.

The group, operating under the banner of the PDP National Reformation Group, said Jonathan’s endorsement was aimed at rebuilding the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The faction’s National Coordinator, Emeka Yellow Ikpegbu, said in a statement that Jonathan remained the most credible figure capable of uniting the party and restoring public confidence in the PDP.

“We believe that former President Goodluck Jonathan possesses the experience, national appeal and integrity needed to reposition the PDP and rescue Nigeria from its current challenges,” the statement said.

The move comes amid lingering internal disputes within the PDP over leadership and strategy following the party’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has not publicly declared interest in the 2027 race.
