Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in a fatal shooting in Effurun, Delta State, according to a statement by Police spokesman DCP Anthony Placid.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, resulted in the death of Mene Ogidi and has sparked public concern over police conduct.
Police said all officers connected to the shooting were withdrawn from Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.
It said following a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee, authorities found that the principal officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of regulations governing the use of firearms. The committee concluded that his actions were unlawful and unprofessional, recommending his dismissal along with other officers found culpable.
The statement said the Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
The Police said that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial killing.
The force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power, stressing that no officer has the right to take life outside the law.The police chief also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be served. The Police urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the process continues.
