The Nigerian government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day, the interior ministry said on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on behalf of the government, congratulating workers across the country on the annual celebration.
He commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication, describing their contributions as vital to national development and economic growth. Tunji-Ojo urged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity and commitment to their duties, noting that these qualities are essential for sustainable development. He said the government remained committed to improving the welfare and security of workers while creating an enabling environment for economic progress.
The minister also called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, encouraging citizens to reflect on unity and hard work in building the nation.The statement was signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani and dated April 29, 2026.
