Tinubu Approves Final Six-Month Tenure Extension For Customs Boss

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has granted Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi a final six-month extension of tenure.

Adeniyi’s current tenure extension was due to expire on Aug. 1, 2026, but the new extension will keep him in office until February 2027. According to a statement from the presidency, the extension is intended to allow Adeniyi consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure an orderly succession process within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

During the transition period, Adeniyi will work with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.

He rose through the ranks, becoming deputy comptroller in 2012, comptroller in 2017, assistant comptroller-general in 2020 and acting deputy comptroller-general in January 2023. President Tinubu appointed Adeniyi Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.
