Record Demand Prompts London Marathon’s Historic Sunday Draw

Organisers of the London Marathon have confirmed that the ballot for the traditional Sunday race will be held as a one-off two-day edition of the event in 2027.

The Sunday marathon, scheduled for April 25, will remain the flagship day of the race, with applicants entered into an initial draw for places on that day before a second ballot allocates runners to the Saturday event.

The special format will see 100,000 participants take part across April 24 and 25, doubling the number of runners compared with previous editions and increasing the chances of success for the record 1.33 million people who entered the ballot.

London Marathon Events Chief Executive Hugh Brasher said the expanded format was designed to accommodate unprecedented demand while generating significant benefits for charities and the wider economy.

Organisers estimate the two-day event could raise more than £150 million for charitable causes and deliver a £400 million economic and social boost to Britain.

All participants will run the traditional course from Greenwich to Westminster, while race organisers are expected to confirm detailed arrangements for elite and mass participation events in the coming months

CliqMetro gathered that the two-day marathon will be held for one year only, organisers revealed that the 2027 edition was a unique response to record-breaking interest in the race.
