Lagos Governor Orders Waste Clearance Across State

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation efforts across the state following a recent build-up of refuse in some communities.

Sanwo-Olu said agencies including the Lagos Waste Management Authority, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Environment had deployed additional trucks and personnel to clear waste backlogs in affected neighbourhoods.

The governor said residents should already be seeing improvements, adding that authorities would continue the exercise until the city was restored to acceptable sanitation standards.

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to support the clean-up efforts by properly bagging household waste and refraining from dumping refuse on roads or in drainage channels. He revealed that the government remained fully committed to resolving the situation and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, posing significant challenges for waste management authorities in Africa’s most populous city.
