Somalia has expressed regret over a decision by the United States to deny entry to Somali international referee Omar Artan, one of the country’s most prominent sporting figures.
In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the government had made diplomatic efforts with U.S. authorities to support Artan’s travel but was unable to secure a favourable outcome.
Artan, named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Referee of the Year in 2025, is widely regarded as Somalia’s most accomplished sports official and a source of national pride.
The ministry said Artan had safely returned to Somalia and would continue carrying out his national and international duties with the professionalism and dedication that have defined his career.
“The Government of Somalia remains immensely proud of Mr. Artan’s achievements and contributions,” the statement said.
It added that Artan’s success had inspired Somali youth and demonstrated that talent, commitment and perseverance could lead to international recognition.
The ministry also thanked countries, institutions, sporting bodies and individuals who expressed support and solidarity following the incident.
Somalia said it would continue engaging with relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding the matter and to safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens.
