Tinubu Backs Hamzat As Lagos Consensus Governorship Candidate

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has endorsed Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus candidate of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) for the 2027 governorship election, signalling growing alignment among political stakeholders in the state.

Tinubu gave the backing on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the GAC, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other party leaders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting, which began around 2:30 p.m., brought together key figures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos and is seen as part of ongoing consultations over the state’s 2027 governorship succession and internal party cohesion.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development, saying Tinubu formally backed Hamzat during the engagement. “President Tinubu formally endorses the Lagos APC consensus governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat at a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council, led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Onanuga said.

The meeting was attended by the GAC chairman Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi and other political stakeholders, underscoring the significance of the endorsement in shaping Lagos State’s political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
