Pope Leo XIV has expressed his condolences following a powerful earthquake in Colombia that killed more than 100 people, according to the Vatican.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck several parts of the country on Monday, causing deaths, injuries and damage to buildings and infrastructure.

In a message to the Archbishop of Cartagena, Francisco Javier Múnera Correa, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin said the Pope was “deeply saddened” by the disaster.

The Pope offered prayers for those who died and appealed for the recovery of people affected by the earthquake.

He also expressed solidarity with families who lost loved ones and communities dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.

Emergency services and authorities have been working to assess the extent of the damage and assist affected residents.

The earthquake has prompted renewed concerns over the safety of buildings and infrastructure in affected areas as rescue and recovery operations continue.
