Civic Intel, a non-governmental organisation, has deployed 238 trained volunteer observers across Osun State to monitor the August 15 governorship election.
The organisation announced this on Monday during the inauguration of its election observers, describing the election as an opportunity to demonstrate how technology and active citizen participation can promote peaceful, credible and transparent elections.
Civic Intel said its observers would be deployed across different parts of the state to monitor the electoral process and document developments at polling units.
The organisation said the observers would submit their findings electronically through its dedicated digital platform, allowing election-related information and eyewitness accounts to be captured and transmitted efficiently.
It identified misinformation, low civic participation, limited access to reliable information and inadequate channels for reporting events as some of the challenges that continue to undermine elections.
According to the group, the use of technology will help improve the speed and accuracy of election monitoring while providing citizens with a platform to report developments from the field.
Civic Intel said the initiative is designed to strengthen transparency and accountability by ensuring that citizens play an active role in observing and documenting the electoral process.
The organisation also stressed the importance of accurate information in countering misinformation and helping voters make informed decisions before, during and after the election.
It said the deployment of the 238 observers would provide broader coverage of the election and contribute to an independent assessment of the conduct of the poll.
Civic Intel expressed optimism that the initiative would boost voter confidence, encourage greater participation and contribute to a peaceful electoral process.
The organisation added that data and observations gathered during the exercise could also provide useful insights for stakeholders and help shape future electoral reforms and outcomes in Osun State.
