Nigeria and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) have agreed to deepen cooperation aimed at transforming the country’s intellectual property assets into commercially viable ventures, Vice President Kashim Shettima said on Monday.
Shettima made the remarks after receiving a WIPO delegation led by Director-General Daren Tang at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. According to the vice president, discussions focused on strengthening collaboration to commercialise research outputs from Nigerian universities and expand support for the country’s growing creative economy.
He said the partnership would involve enhanced technical cooperation, stronger institutional support and expanded capacity-building initiatives designed to unlock the economic value of intellectual property.
Shettima said Nigeria was committed to building an intellectual property framework that benefits a broad range of stakeholders, including inventors, investors, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, industrialists, farmers and software developers.
He added that the government’s objective was to establish an intellectual property system capable of driving innovation, attracting investment and supporting economic growth through the effective protection and commercialisation of ideas and creative works.
The meeting was attended by senior Nigerian government officials alongside the WIPO delegation.
