Gunman Dies After White House Checkpoint Shootout Incident

A gunman who opened fire at a security checkpoint near the White House and was shot by U.S. Secret Service officers later died in hospital on Saturday, the agency said. The incident occurred at the checkpoint located at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House, when the suspect pulled a firearm from a bag and began shooting at officers, according to a Secret Service statement.

Officers returned fire, striking the gunman. He was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries, the agency said.

A bystander was also hit by gunfire during the incident, although authorities said it was not immediately clear whether the person was struck when the suspect began firing or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire.

The extent of the bystander’s injuries was not disclosed. A law enforcement official revealed that the suspect had been identified as an emotionally disturbed individual and had previously been issued a stay-away order.

The Secret Service said no law enforcement personnel were injured in the shooting and confirmed that President Donald Trump was at the White House at the time of the incident.

The shooting comes less than a month after a separate gunfire incident at a hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, which prompted Trump and other officials to be evacuated from the venue.
