A minor fire outbreak in the Senate wing of the National Assembly was swiftly contained on Wednesday, preventing further damage and disruption.
The incident occurred in the kitchen area adjoining Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), chaired by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa as the North-East representative on the commission’s board.
Smoke from the fire briefly filled the area, causing concern among staff and visitors. However, Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha quickly intervened to extinguish the fire before it could spread.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire was triggered by a microwave left switched on in the kitchen compartment. No casualties or injuries were recorded, and normal activities resumed shortly after the incident. Officials commended the swift response, which helped avert what could have been a more serious situation.
