The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid moves by lawmakers to impeach him.
His resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who said further details would be released later.
Following his exit, Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, emerged as the new Speaker.
Idiaye, a third-term lawmaker from Edo North, said the change followed the Assembly’s zoning arrangement, which provides that the Speaker should come from Edo North when the governor is from Edo Central.
The new Speaker accused Agbebaku of poor leadership and alleged corruption, claiming that prolonged adjournments and other challenges had affected the Assembly’s effectiveness.
Idiaye said the new leadership would support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration and work to move the state forward.
Assembly members were also said to have visited the Government House to brief the governor on the change in leadership.
