Nigeria, IEA Sign Agreement to Strengthen Energy Partnership

Nigeria and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation on energy data, policy development and investment, Vice President Kashim Shettima said on Thursday.

Shettima said the agreement was signed during a meeting with an IEA delegation led by its Executive Director, Fatih Birol, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Under the Joint Work Programme, Nigeria and the IEA will work together to improve the development of energy data to support policymaking and investment across the energy value chain, with the aim of promoting economic growth and strengthening energy security.

Shettima also described Nigeria’s formal admission into the IEA as an Association Country as a significant milestone, saying it reflected the progress made under the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The partnership is expected to deepen Nigeria’s engagement with the Paris-based energy agency while supporting efforts to improve energy-sector planning, investment and security.
