The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has warned that Nigeria risks slowing its digital economy ambitions unless it strengthens indigenous participation and harnesses local tech talent.
ATCON President Tony Emoekpere said at the group’s annual general meeting in Lagos that broadband expansion must extend beyond urban centres and empower local Internet service providers (ISPs) to drive inclusive growth.
Emoekpere said local ISPs play a key role in last-mile connectivity, grassroots innovation and job creation in underserved communities. “If properly empowered, these businesses will not only provide connectivity but unlock opportunities in fintech, software development, digital platforms and emerging technologies,” the ATCON President said.
He cited countries like India as examples of how combining digital infrastructure with strong local capacity can transform economies and create jobs.
The ATCON President called for closer industry collaboration to develop a telecom-specific local content framework and a practical roadmap for implementation.
