Explosives-Packed Drone Discovered Near Bogota Airport, Military Base

Report says an explosives-laden drone was discovered near El Dorado International Airport and an adjacent military base.

Authorities reportedly found the fibre-optic drone on Wednesday about 5.4 km (3 miles) from the military air base, which borders Bogota’s main international airport.

CliqMetro gathered that the discovery comes amid a surge in attacks by left-wing guerrilla groups linked to drug trafficking ahead of Colombia’s May 31 presidential election.

The military said the drone was believed to belong to one of the guerrilla factions operating in the country. Several armed groups still fighting the Colombian state have increasingly deployed drones in attacks targeting military facilities and police stations. Fibre-optic drones, which are resistant to electronic jamming, have become widely associated with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Colombian army official, who was not authorised to speak publicly, said the alert about the drone originated from prosecutors in the troubled southwestern department of Cauca Department. A bomb attack on a major road in Cauca on April 25 killed 21 people, marking the deadliest attack involving civilians since the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, bombed a nightclub in Bogota in 2003.

Dissident FARC rebels opposed to the landmark 2016 peace agreement claimed responsibility for the Cauca bombing, but said civilians were not the intended target.
