The San Antonio Spurs, powered by Victor Wembanyama, dethroned defending NBA champions Oklahoma City Thunder with a 111-103 victory on Saturday to clinch the Western Conference finals and book a championship showdown with the New York Knicks.
The Spurs won the best-of-seven series 4-3, advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time in the Wembanyama era. The championship series opens on Wednesday in San Antonio.
Wembanyama, the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, delivered 22 points and seven rebounds in his first career Game Seven, while Julian Champagnie added 20 points, including six three-pointers.
Stephon Castle contributed 16 points as San Antonio led for most of the contest.”We had a good team, a great team. “We had to stay the course and play a good game.”We were passing the ball. We were playing as a team. We come out here and play together,” Champagnie said.
He also credited Wembanyama’s influence on the team’s deep playoff run.”We never knew if we were going to get this far but when you’ve got the greatest player in the world things happen,” he said.
Wembanyama celebrated with teammates after reaching his first NBA Finals, capping another standout performance in a breakthrough postseason campaign.
