The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has defended the conduct of its recent nationwide primaries, rejecting allegations that party leaders imposed candidates on members ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party said its nomination process was transparent and democratic, it insisted that aspirants emerged through established procedures approved by its leadership and members.
The NDC dismissed claims of candidate imposition as unfounded and politically motivated. Speaking on the outcome of the primaries, the NDC National Secretary, Morgan Enekweizu, said criticisms of the primaries stemmed from ignorance of the party’s constitution and guidelines, as well as deliberate attempts to undermine the party’s growing influence.
He maintained that delegates and members were given the opportunity to participate in the selection process, adding that internal mechanisms were in place to address grievances arising from the exercise.
The party also urged members and supporters to disregard unofficial reports and results circulating on social media, stressing that only the National Executive Council was authorised to ratify and announce the final outcomes of the primaries.
The NDC said it remained committed to internal democracy and would continue consultations with stakeholders to strengthen party unity ahead of the next general election.
The defence comes amid criticism from some aspirants and party members who alleged irregularities in the primaries and accused party leaders of favouring preferred candidates.
The statement said the allegations were not supported by evidence and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a credible and transparent nomination process.
