A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order pending the hearing and determination of Sowore’s application seeking a stay of the court’s earlier decision revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant for his arrest.
The judge also dismissed an application by Sowore requesting that he recuse himself from the case over allegations of bias.
The matter was adjourned until June 24 for hearing of the motion for stay, filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Sowore arrived at the court accompanied by supporters carrying placards.
Justice Umar had on June 16 revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a bench warrant after the activist failed to appear for his trial.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore over alleged defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu, whom he referred to as “a criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
