Stowaway Prevention In Nigeria: NIMASA Takes Campaign To The Grassroots

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has intensified efforts to curb stowaway incidents by taking its public awareness campaign to grassroots communities across the country.

At Snake Island in Lagos, the agency engaged community leaders, youths and residents on the dangers and legal consequences of attempting to stow away on vessels. The sensitisation programme highlighted the risks to human life, maritime security and Nigeria’s international reputation.

Residents commended NIMASA for the initiative, describing the campaign as timely and impactful in educating young people about the realities and dangers associated with illegal migration through maritime routes.

Leading the agency’s team, Head of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code Unit, Mudi Isa, said stowaway incidents continue to pose significant challenges to the country’s maritime sector and negatively affect Nigeria’s image within the global shipping community.

He stressed that NIMASA remains committed to preventing such incidents through sustained public enlightenment and community engagement, noting that awareness at the grassroots level is critical to addressing the problem before it occurs.

The agency said it will continue to partner with coastal communities and other stakeholders to promote maritime safety, security and compliance with international shipping regulations.
